Floating Wind Challenge 2025

We are participating in the Floating Wind Challenge, an international competition where, primarily students from the Hirabayashi Laboratory, design and build models of floating offshore wind turbines, conduct performance evaluations, and perform full-scale assessments. https://www.floatingwindchallenge.com/

The evaluation criteria consist of five items: structural integrity, floating stability, power generation, transportation and installation at full scale, and cost at full scale.

This year, the event will be held in Belgium. Our team, "IBO Gyudon," comprises eight members: five from the University of Tokyo, two from Yokohama National University, and one from Hirosaki University. Our innovative floating structure for this year is based on a semi-submersible design, featuring non-vertical side shells and a groundbreaking wooden tower, as we aim for victory. The entire process of evaluating floating offshore wind turbines, from design and manufacturing to business feasibility, offers a wealth of learning and invaluable experience.

We conduct simulations to predict performance and design the tower, floater, mooring system, and anchors. Following this, we perform tank testing and offshore experiments, closely resembling real-world demonstration tests.
